Character
Name: M.K. (Mary Katherine)

Appearance: here

Canon: Epic

History: here

Canon point: Post-canon

Personality:
M.K. has become very independent over the years. When she and her mother left her father, M.K. became more guarded about letting people into her life. Her father disappointed her when he was consumed with his research. She was young when they left, but she still understood how much her father had hurt not only her, but her mother as well. Due to that she grew up relying only on her mother and herself, and when he mother passed away she had only herself to fall back on. She went so far as to walk herself through the stages of grief by herself after doing the research. At the start of the movie M.K. is completely closed off from forming new relationships, knowing that eventually they have to end. Her initial conversation with the cabbie driving her is short and witty, which is something she keeps up with other characters like her father, Ronin, and Nod until later on. This independence also sprouted a sense of heavy realism in M.K. While her father is happy to research fantastic thing like tiny people who live in the woods as if it were real, M.K. has more trouble believing in the fantastic. After losing her father to imaginary things, she gave up on them all together. When she confronts her father she thinks that he has lost his mind, not believing that there might be some truth to his research. Even after she is made small by Queen Tara, M.K. has trouble coming to terms with everything she thought impossible being real. She begins to think in terms of what she can comprehend. A woman died and left her responsible. M.K. focuses on her task, and on putting things back to “normal” at first instead of outright accepting the Leafmen and the magical world living in the forest. Over the course of the film she opens up her mind until she’s more than happy to believe in the magic in the world alongside her father.

Despite trying to keep her distance from people, M.K. is at heart a very caring person. She returned home to see her father after promising to do so to her mother. Her love for her mother is what compelled her forward, but when she arrives and sees the chaotic state that her father lives in her concern is obvious. It’s easy to focus on her thinking her father’s obsession has caused him to lose his mind, but you can also see how upset she is about the way he takes care of himself. At first she is more concerned about her own well-being but by the end of the movie she begins to realize how much her father needs her and how much she needed him. When M.K. is shrunk by Queen Tara the first thing M.K. does is run to Tara’s side. She recognizes that Tara has been hurt badly and her first instinct is to help. Even when the two are surrounded by the Leafmen, who M.K. assumes are a threat, she holds Tara close in an attempt to protect her. Once M.K. becomes invested in the fate of the forest she is steadfast in her support. What begins as a trip to get herself back to normal becomes a fight for the life of the forest which she had previously not even known was going on. M.K. is told at one point that in order to get back to normal she must be present when the pod Queen Tara chose bloomed. In order to help the Leafmen fight for the pod, M.K. misses her chance to be with the pod and it blooms without her. She is able to move on from her selfish motivations and help the greater cause. The forest and the creatures living in it became things she truly cared about. M.K. will fight her hardest to help the people and things she cares about.

M.K. is very outspoken as well. She doesn’t hide her distaste for her father or his lifestyle at the beginning of the movie, nor does she hold back her opinions about Nod and his cavalier attitude. She’s be raised to speak her mind and isn’t one to hold back if she feels strongly about something. Similarly, she will defend the people and things she cares about with not only her actions, but her words. At one point Ronin and Nod are making fun of M.K.’s father. She is quick to snap at them for their jokes. She won’t stand by and listen to anyone speak badly about people if it is undeserved. She’s very determined as well once she sets her mind out something. This can come off as a bit stubborn at times. Though Ronin and Nod are the experts of the forest M.K. does not shy away from learning what she can to learn more and become more independent as she has been before. She stands face to face with a mouse several times her size, perfects the Leafmen’s ability to jump and scale large distances, and even learns to fly a bird. M.K. enjoys her independence and will do whatever it takes to earn that.

She is also very resourceful and quick thinking. When the pod, Mub and Grub are taken by Mandrake it becomes evident that M.K’s group must sneak into the Boggin’s lair to save them. In order to blend in M.K. suggests the wear Boggin armor to disguise themselves. She brings them back to her house where she remembered her father had some of the armor on display. Towards the end of the film the fight against the Boggins is looking bleak. M.K. remembered her father telling her about bat calls he had stored on his MP3 player and used the sounds to distract the bats which the boggins were riding. Thanks to her the pod was safe and able to bloom as it needed.

Because of her father’s absence M.K. is covering up a fair amount of abandonment issues and a vulnerability. She isn’t weak by any means but under her quick-witted exterior she still feels things deeply. By the end of the movie she has opened up more and is willing to let people into her heart but she still feels what a risk that is deep down. She loves her father, has feelings for Nod, and cares about her friends in the forest but it’s hard for her not to worry about what could go wrong in all of those relationships. It isn’t something that drags her down, but it is something she is cautious about. She guards her heart and it will take a while for anyone to get to the more personal aspects of M.K. Until then they will be supplied with her good humor, caring nature, and unspoken mannerisms.

Powers/Special Abilities: M.K. is an ordinary human being and has no special powers or abilities unless she is shrunken down to Leafmen size, which isn’t likely to happen. However is she is ever shrunk she would gain the Leafmen’s ability to go at a faster speed than everything else and leap very high and far.

Inventory: M.K. will be bringing a couple of bags with her. They will contain:
- Several changes of clothes
- A framed photo of her family when she was younger
- A more recent photo of her and her mother
- A more recent photo of her, her father and their dog Ozzy
- A sketchbook full of Leafmen and Boggin drawings
- A small book with pressed flowers and leaves in them

Greatest Fear:
M.K.’s greatest fear is all of her loved ones abandoning her. Though she has forgiven her father for dedicating so much of his life to his research, M.K. has still been deeply affected by his emotional abandonment. Her deepest fear is that one day all the people she lets into her life will turn away from her. This includes her father, Nod, Ronin, the rest of her friends in the forest, and eventually it will mean the friends she makes at school. Whether they leave her by choice or by death, the fear that she will be left alone without a friend in the world weighs heavy on her mind if she lets it.

How is your character appropriate for this game?
M.K. isn’t afraid of a challenge. When the protection of the pod was put in her care she carried out her duty to the end. She fought for the life of the forest before and she will fight for the life of any world if it means that people will be save. Her determination and quick thinking will prove very useful in a struggle. Despite her fears that will be made all too powerful by the mist, she will not give in. She will struggle alongside everyone in the school to do whatever she can to help.

AU Specific Section
AU history
M.K's AU history is not very different from her canon history. M.K, is located in Middle America. The mist has not been a major presence in her area, just barely touching it, but everyone has begun to take notice of it. After enjoying a peaceful summer once the mess with Mandrake and the Boggins was settled, M.K. began discussing the mist's affect on the forest and the Leafmen. They were having more trouble as the mist creeps closer. His concern was enough to get M.K. worried about what worse could be coming.

Soon after that M.K. received her invitation to the academy. After some lengthy discussions with her father, and then Ronin, Nod and Queen Marigold, M.K. decided this could be her chance to learn more about what was going on. Her intention in attending the academy is to learn of course, but also to do what she can to help. She isn't sure what exactly will happen when she gets there, but it's better than sitting around doing nothing. If possible she would want to send any information she finds back to her home so that they can be prepared.

How has it affected them?
M.K. has not been personally affected by the mist yet as it has not come in strong enough around her home. She is concerned about it’s possible approach and wants to do all she can to prevent it or at least fight against its affects should it arrive at home. It's her concern for her father and the forest that compels her to go on. She wants to do what she can to protect the people who have become so precious to her.

[The camera turns on and a visibly relaxed M.K. is looking into it. She waves with her free hand.]

Well, I figured I’d be starting a new school for my senior year, but this isn’t really what I was expecting. I mean, yeah I volunteered to come here when the invitation. It’s not like I’d be expecting something like this, though.

Then again I’ve had a lot of stuff happen around me lately that I wasn’t expecting.
[She smirks and rolls her eyes upward for a moment before addressing the screen again.]

I’m M.K., by the way. I haven’t really gotten a chance to meet anyone around campus yet so I figured I’d throw my name out there.

[She leans in a bit.] So, does anyone really know what the deal with all that mist is? I’m trying to find out as much as I can and fast.

Thanks!

Third Person Sample
M.K. hadn’t brought a lot of things along with her to the dorms. She didn’t really know just how long she’d be there, but part of her was hoping not very long. She had just been getting settled into the house with her dad and Ozzy. Having to do that all over again hadn’t exactly been on her to-do list, but she didn’t regret her decision.

She opened up the sketchbook and glanced over the one of Ronin and Nod which she’d instructed her father on how to draw. She smiled warmly at the penciled versions of her friends. When she gotten the invitation from the academy M.K. had been baffled. She’d never heard of the place. She’d talked to Nod about it and he’d been just as confused. Only Ronin had any light to shed on the matter. He’d heard rumors of a black mist entering other forests, though not their own. It was obvious he was worried and that alone was enough to start M.K. packing. She didn’t imagine for a second that the two things were unrelated. Though it had been hard, almost impossible, to leave her father and the forest behind, M.K. had done it.

She sighed heavily as she set the sketchbook down. She missed everyone already. She missed making pancakes for her father in the morning. She missed walking by a window sill as spotting a flower left behind by Nod. She missed Ozzy running around in dizzy little circles, and she missed Mub and Grub keeping her up to date on all the forest news and gossip. It was the things she missed that were keeping her there though. The one thing she was sure of was that something bad was coming and she needed to be ready for it. She was going to do whatever it took to protect the things she was missing, and right then the best thing she could do for them was be right there at the academy.
